Who Was Mr. Wizard?

Don Herbert, also known as Mr. Wizard, was a TV personality who demonstrated in most entertaining ways, important principles of science. He would invite a youngster to join him in uncovering very interesting scientific puzzles, thus educating the TV without inflicting the concern of either a burned-out mind, or boredom. His TV show was entitled Watch Mr. Wizard, and it was a staple of the Baby-Boomer generation, being approved in the 1950’s through the early 1960’s.

What’s the Movie All About?

Everyday of our lives, no matter who we are, where we go, or what we do, we are exposed to radioactivity. Everyday Radioactivity, which discusses this very theme, is a “Mr. Wizard Science Film” designed for the classroom, that you can obtain for yourself, by downloading from the Internet!1 An MPEG film, it is some twelve minutes in length, it is simple, and it is very informative.

Three types of radioactivity are discussed at length – alpha, beta, and gamma radioactivity. These forms of activity possess different relative energies, and so have different penetrating capabilities. Three substances demonstrating the three types of radiation are discussed: polonium 210, uranium 238, and radium 226.

The discussion includes the use of the Geiger Counter, and the functioning methodology of the scintillation counter. A radiation puzzle is presented and solved, using the scintillation counter. What is the radioactive component of a particular glaze? Following the tight reasoning, you will know what it is. You may be shocked to learn that the radioactive glaze in the puzzle was once commonly used in coating dinner dishes!
